Discussion: Initially this unit was identified as a burned concentration that was identifiable by higher occurances of charcoal, ash, burned brick, and burned bone.
Further excavation indicated that this was not a discrete concentration, but merely the makeup of the next unit that was stratigraphically lower: Unit 20404.

This unit was initially defined as a patchy, circular area with a concentration of burned material. It included high inclusions of charcoal, burned bone, brick and rock, and diffuse amounts of ash. Three bricks were identified along the northwest extent. Three pieces of burned pottery (identified by the priority tour as typical cooking ware) were located along the Northeastern edge. Throughout the matrix a number of faunal bone were identified, including a large auroch vertebrae and a horn core, which were taken as x-finds. Interpretation of this unit shifted from a fire spot (initially) to a concentration of burned material that was part of the infill matrix and represented a secondary refuse dump, rather than an in situ fire event. We therefore changed the category to SAME AS Unit 20404 and merge this deposit with the infill within the rest of the building. Note that the horn core located in this area was partially located under the south unit wall where it had been undercut and replastered.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
