Unit 20696
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Infill of post retrieval pit
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: posthole; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: Infill of post retrieval cut U. 20697. The top of the unit was similar in texture and composition to the building infill, U. 20627. Disaggregate ashes (secondary deposited) were present at the top of the unit, especially towards the south wall.
A thick patch (ca. 3cm depth) of burnt natural sediment was found close to the southern wall.
Fragments of burnt clay (up to 10cm diameter) were found towards the base of the pit.
Otherwise this infill contained very few inclusions: a number of bones, very few obsidian flakes and two large rocks. The unit has been very disturbed by animal burrowing.
The western limit of the infill/cut was very difficult to determine due to the similarities between U.20696 and the building infill, and the steep inclination of the deposits.
There seems to be more than one infill episode in this unit: the ashy layers found towards the top of tue sequence and pushed against the south wall might have served to level the floor after the earlier infill (loose sediment) sinked and became more compact after trampling. We have come to hypothesize that this Space was occupied after being partly infilled, and that the abandonment of this building took place in several stages.
Consistency: Soft to firm (heterogeneous matrix)

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
