Unit 20856
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Burnt fill,Destruction layer
Data Category Information: Description: fire spots (non-structured); Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: This unit represents the burnt fill of space 444 (often called the storage room of B. 96 in other documentation, though truncation by Mellaart prevents a full understanding of the space). The soil is quite loose, and easily differentiated from the threshold immediately to the south, which is light brown in comparison to the dark grey color of u. 20856. It may represent intentional destruction of the space, a theory supported only by the groundstone tool found at the point of highest heat and by the cluster of bone found immediately underneath this layer, on top of an unburnt compact clay layer. The presence of extensive animal burrows may also be significant, since this has been suggested as a reason for abandoning bins-- though it is difficult to know if these burrows are more recent or not. If rust flakes are noted in samples taken, this is due to an iron post inserted in sp. 444 for safety.
Consistency: loose to friable
Colour: orange, black, grey-- wide-ranging, mostly dark
Texture: ashy, sandy loam
Bedding: massive but heterogeneous
Inclusions: charcoal, ash, salts
Post-depositional Features: truncation by Mellaart, animal burrows
Basal Boundary: mostly clear-- came down on cluster of large faunal bone embedded in a light brown, compact clay loam. Interface blurred by extensive animal burrows.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
Finds Material Stored: nothing recorded
