Unit 20863
Category: Cluster dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Deposit before abandonment
Data Category Information: Location: building; Material: animal bone; Deposition: primary deposition
Description: This cluster consists of 4 bos scapulae, 1 astragalus, 2 vertebrae, 1 sheep/goat cranium, and 1 stork ulna
Discussion: This cluster of animal bone was revealed beneath u. 20856, what appears to be the destruction layer of space 444, since it was composed of loose ash and seemed to have an evident point of ignition. This cluster seems to be the last depositional event in this space before its destruction. It consists of 4 bos scapulae, which the faunal team initially suggests might be used shovels, as well as 2 vertebrae, an astragalus, and a sheep cranium deposited upside down-- a fact which belies determining this cluster to be a ritual deposit. Few bones were removed complete, as the compression of being embedded in matrix u. 20864 led to a high degree of cracking. The stork/crane ulna is an especially significant find, given the symbolic associations of this bone in other contexts.
Addition 2015:
Another bone was added to the cluster in 2015 (long bone adjecent to the wall F3514).
