Unit 20940
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Platform infill,Platform make-up
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: floor (packing only); Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: Coarse infill/make-up showing numerous inclusions of burnt clay (ca.20-30% abundance) and sandy texture. The unit was found under the plaster layer (U.20628) of the platform (F.7114) and occupies the northern half of it.
An ashy patch was found against the N wall - this practice of placing re-deposited ashes against walls seems to be very common in this building.
Towards the S and E sides of the unit, a thick layer of clay, mudbrick-like was found. Underneath this unit there is a layer of greyish, sandy silt make-up. This unit seems to have served to extend the original length of platform F.7114 towards the N by levelling the floor in this corner for a later plastering.
The reddish clay ridges (ca.5-10cm width) were included in this unit, despite their distinguishable nature, as they seem to be part of this infill/make-up. The texture and composition of this clay was the same as U.20914 (clay packing under S wall undercut). It seems as if the building inhabitants deliberately chose this material to pack the corners and undercuts of this space. Does this represent symbolic behaviour (i.e. related to building abandonement practices) or are there practical reasons for this pattern?
