Unit 2102
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: platform plaster
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: raised area (platform); Material: white clay; Deposition: multiple
Dimensions: 1.45m l.x 0.06m w.x 0.18m th.(max)
Discussion: This plaster deposit was used to face the eastern edge of the platform. It consisted of a few layers of a white or light grey plaster, with a red plaster layer surviving as traces over the face. This plaster was quite coarse and gritty. It had also been used to patch up a wear hollow or damaged area halfway along the eastern face. It was here that it had been truncated by stakehole [2104].
This plaster was quite different from the plaster along the southern face of the platform which was stratigraphically earlier. This material was greyer in colour, more visibly layered, and greasier in texture.
Extends as far north as the main EW northern wall of the building.
Execution: trowel, hand shovel
Condition: coold, damp
Consistency: weak
Colour: variable-10 YR 8/1 white to 10 YR 7/ 2 light grey when dry
Texture: gritty silt
Bedding: layered-several layers of plaster= treated as one context. These= paralel and= banded vertically.
Inclusions: small gritty particles (< 1mm <5% )
Post-depositional Features: small rootlets had penetrated behind this deposit
Basal Boundary: reletively clear and distinct interface (0-5mm) with deposits below, especially as in some places rootlets had eased apart [2102] from underlying deposits
