Unit 2116

Category: cut    dug in 1997

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: grave cut

Data Category Information: Description: burial

Dimensions: 65x 55cm

Description: Heavily truncated grave cut: This is only known from the west edge. the rest reconstructed at the base level partly visible in the soil , partly based on extent of skeleton.

Not sure from which level this was cut -presumably mid-floor somewhere but could be highest floor, as W. edge seems to be part of cut 1927

Discussion: Only the W edge found, the rest defined by the extent of skeleton (1995) which reached across the area opened for burial 29. A new cut found 16/8 may be the E. edge as a leg is running under the E. edge so far and could belong to skeleton (1995), which overlay it & had no legs.
19/8 - the leg running under E. edge belongs to skeleton (2115), which was within the new cut at E. edge now called [2117]. whether cut [1998] was the S. edge of [2116] is another question I'd like answered. There was nothing in it & it could be part of [2116], or belong to an earlier cut disturbed, contents removed, by [2116]. [2116] definitely cut [2117] at the base; its stratigraphic relationship to skeletons. (1968) & (1963) is unclear - these may be redeposited within [2116], or the (non-existent) cut for (1968) may be cut by [2116].

Execution: trowel, leaf, stick

Condition: hot/dry - heavy rain - cool windy

Shape: oval

Sides: vertical or almost so

Base Break: uncertain

Base: unclear, due to presence of skeleton plus underlying ske. frags. but probably pretty flat

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

X Finds Material: nothing recorded
