Unit 21180
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Wall collapse
Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: This unit was recognized as a layer covering almost all of space 40, containing layers of plaster, brick (clayey and sandy bricks), mortar. It was excavated with trowel to follow the plaster layers and pick axe when not needing to be so delicate.
It was a well preserved layer, and seems to be the collapse of a wall judging by the regular layers of plaster and brick. It seems that at some point the prehistoric people wanted to build something new and tore down some walls. Some bricks were then reused as foundation bricks (see U 21348, 21349) for F3660 and 3656. It is likely that there had not been a building in use in the space for quite some time before this collapse, even though the remains of it were standing.
Its basal bounary was relatively clear - it was sloping above 21181 infill unit. In its eastern part an old infil appeared. In the W it was more diffuse as the next unit was similar (21503). X1 is a heap of bones initially thought to be a burial, but clearly not after investigation. Perhaps the bones are human, only analysis will tell. In an animal burrow into this layer, directly under F7572, human remains with beads appeared, presumably from some unknown grave below or the grave cluster above.
