Unit 21191

Category: Layer    dug in 2014

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: Brick of wall F.7560

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: building; Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous

Description: The bricks of wall F.7560 are averagely 0.75m long, 0.48m wide and 0.085 m thick. In some cases, they have been damaged by erosion and animal burrows.

Discussion: The bricks of wall F.7560 are arranged into three lines. The first line is heavily eroded (very close to the topsoil level), while the other two lines are damaged in some points as well (see description).

Underneath the lowest line of bricks, we found a thin layer of mortar. When we removed it, we found the highest line of bricks of an earlier wall (not excavated yet), which appears heavily burnt.

The bricks of wall F.7560 were found lying on wall F.7559, even if the similarities between the two walls made us think of two building events very close in time.

Excavated by mattock and trowel.

03/07/2015: The full extent of this unit was excavated by pick and trowel in 2015 in order to reveal the wall of B.131 immediately below (f. 7705). None of the material was sampled or sieved, as this had been done in 2014 by Aldo and Agata.
