Discussion: This disarticulated skull was the highest skeletal element in burial 47. Its smallish size and thin cranial bone thickness led Basak to suggest that it is a juvenile. It lay tucked underneath the undercut north eastern edge of the grave cut. Though no clear stratigraphic relationship between this skull and the adult bones of unit (1955) could be established (and so both have been put as being below fill 1982 and above fill 2124), it is probable that this skull was placed in the burial after some if not all of the adult bones had been deposited. An adult femur from skeleton 1955 was partially overlain by the skull. However, skull 2126 may have been earlier, and pushed to one side as 1955 was being inserted. During such a process, the femur could easily have been shoved underneath the earlier skull. The relationship between them must thus remain equivocal.
No clearly identifiable juvenile post-cranial remains could be identified during excavation, lab work may do so.
When this skull was lifted, it simply collapsed into a heap of barely articulating fragments. Not only had numerous small rootlets penetrated around, behind and through the skull, but a small mammal burrow had penetrated underneath the skull and had further disturbed the cranial bones.
The left ribs of skeleton 1955 were lying behind 2126 to the north and north east.
