Unit 21702
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Plaster cap on cut (burial) in platform 3442
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: raised area (platform); Material: plaster; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: unpainted
Discussion: Layer was identified under U. 20096, a make up layer of F. 3442 as a fine, thin layer of plaster over burial cut and fill F 7406. It was too fine to be remnants of the white plaster surface on the S edge of F 3442, and also appeared to extend just over the edge of the burial cut and not over the make up that cut U. 21707 is into. This may have served as a kind of plaster marker or cap to the burial, possibly to seal it or memorialize the location of the inhumation. There appears to be a pattern of this practice in B. 80 as both neonate burials on F. 3442 and the child burial on F. 3441 contained an eroded plaster cap on the fill and cut.
