Unit 2194
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: grave fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 44? x 23 x 9 cm (the 44 may be 34 if the cut didn't really extend over shelf)
Discussion: There were many voids in the fill around the skeleton, particularly around the arms below the ribs. Lots of chalk in this fill too. It is not clear whether the cut originally extended all the way to the N - this area has a clay fill which is shallow and comes onto a ledge, cutting down where the 'real' fill is.
A lot of charcoal / burning & a big stone beneath skull / upper body, pushed point down (it is wedge-shaped) into the fill below but covered with ash / blackened.
Execution: leaf, dental pick, brush
Condition: warm - hot, calm, dry
Consistency: weak
Colour: 10 YR 5/4 - 4/4
Texture: loam (+clay)
Bedding: Massive / convolute? - really massive but in additional, different material added as backfill. This takes the form of clean clay chunks and aggregates as the probable deliberate fill plus some of the (massive) charcoaly midden-type make-up layer into which this burial was cut.
Inclusions: Charcoal <2cm, 5%; chalk pieces <2cm, 5%
Post-depositional Features: non noticed, except accidental removal of E edge by someone removing the underlying deposit
