Discussion: Many voids were apparent when excavating this neonate, both within the ribcage and around the arms, suggesting organic decay - possible food between the arms? - or flowers?.
Also the right arm has dropped some 3 cm or more below the clavicle, suggesting again possible decay of something, or else a strange disturbance of the clavicle. Excellent preservation of the bones, perfect articulation of a hand and foot. Three possible grave goods, to be examined later.
This burial was cut into the lower sub-floor packing and respects the lowest course of the W wall of space 71. Next to it is another neonate - or premature - baby in a similar cut. These may be foundation burials. Lots of chalk in the fill. Possible phytolith around base - textile? When scapula (R) was lifted, the soil below looked seed-rich (<3>). Second rib in the main group was on its side, flat - why? (30.8)
1.9: found another clavicle in the right position - I thought the other was a bit big / odd (but no left clavicle so far)

14/09/09 Michele Massa: I have deleted x-finds in 2199 since they are repetition of x-finds in 2194

Condition: warm, hot , dry

X and Y of Targets: Target A - X: 0; Target A - Y: 0; Target B - X: 0; Target B - Y: 0; Target C - X: 0; Target C - Y: 0; Target D - X: 0; Target D - Y: 0

Body: Roughly N-S, though curved

Head: on the left side, looking N

Right Arm: extended across ribs, hand beyond chin

Left Arm: bent 90 degrees at elbow, extending beyond R arm, hand twisted backwards towards knees

Right Leg: extended forward, femur accidentally removed with pelvis which burial was discovered, foot pointing to head & near L hand

Left Leg: flexed lightly, femur at 90 degrees to body, foot accidentally removed when burial was discovered

Other comments: Fully articulated neonate in crouched position lying on left side to wall, facing north. Seems to be twisted slightly onto its back, from position of L arm. R clavicle very high above arm.

Unit description: Only bone recorded from this unit is X2, a complete bird radius that may be part of grave goods with a neonate. The only other bone seems to be a rib fragment. There is no other bird bone from this unit or the burial fill (2194). Radius is intact, in perfect condition, supporting idea that placed in burial rather than accidentally in fill. But if food offering or wing, should have at least the ulna as well; put in as bone?
