Unit 2203
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Building fill
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: A post-Neolithic grave was excavated in this unit (2205/2206) before its excavation so there should be a minimum of mixing of materials. However it is very close to the surface. The soil in this unit is very soft in the eastern half. Maybe it's a very large animal hole in this area.
Condition: mixed, dry
Consistency: very weak - loose crumbly deposit
Colour: 10YR5/4 (with variations around)
Texture: silty-clay loam
Bedding: discontinuous lenses and chunks of different soils
Inclusions: many inclusions of building materials. small amounts of bone and clay inclusions (<2%), very little charcoal (<1%)
Post-depositional Features: Lots of bio-turbation: roots and rodents.
Basal Boundary: N/A
Unit Stratigraphy (as recorded in the field):
Dry sieve volume: 448

Unit description: Building fill, close to the surface, lots of bioturbation (roots and rodents). Small unit, burnt 30% (mostly black carbonised, but also grey calcined and partly burnt) , some weathering, sheep size dominate, few fragments of Bos size flat bones and ribs. Fairly fragmented, but biggish pieces (a lot in the 4-8 cm range). All body parts represented, but no toes apart from a sesamoid. Some stray human and one microfauna. Fragment of needle. Looks like disturbed midden, although scant on long bones. Sample 1 >4 mm flotation 100% sorted; only diagnostics recorded, rest as flot frags. Moderate size sample, similar to dry sieved but ranging down to smaller size fragments. No fish or microfauna. Last number = 87Figurine Records: No GroundStone Records: No Heavy Residue Records: No Microfaunal Records: No
