Description: This unit has two distinct layers. The soil description for each are below; the upper layer description is before the slash, and the lower layer soil description is after the slash.

Discussion: At first we thought this dark ashy soil in the south half of this unit may be a bin but it was all collected as one unit --contamination -- so near surface. As the excavation of this unit proceeds the black soil is very very loose and dusty and seems to cut the brick room fill. This pit stretches throughout the quad.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Medium-large unit coming from an arbitrary layer within the midden in the space 86. Mostly sheep-size, few large mammal bones. Large mammal is mostly cranial. Fragments of ?Bos cranium. Fragments of horn cores, but not a lot. 20 % burnt (carbonized and calcined). Various weathering. ID: sheep cranial and postcranial, few bird, micromammals and cattle remains. At least 4 juvenile and one adult Ovis/Capra. One of them identified as Ovis on the base of right and left branch of mandible probably from a single animal. Broken in many pieces (recent breaks), but a fragment of a left branch shows old break. Possibly broken when thrown into the midden. X4 Bos primigenius mandibula. Jaw bone could not be reconstructed and is packed in a bag with an explanatory label, while three molars are reconstructed. Both sheep/goat and cattle phalanges are highly fragmented, although not gnawed or digested. Bone grease? Looks like midden, with more deterioration than most due to proximity to ground surface. Samples 1 and 3 >4 mm flotation 100% sorted; only diagnostics recorded, rest as flot frags. Sample 1 is largish and looks generally like the unit as a whole, with a variety of taxa and body parts, although little if any horn core. Some microfauna, eggshell, mussel shell, and a burnt small bird tarsometatarsus. Rather fragmented and worn, but some larger chunks. Sample 3 is smaller and has less large mammal. Last number = 345
