Discussion: At first it appeared that the cut for thepoit was quite obvious, but as work went along the edges of the pit seemed more and more obscure. The basal boundary of this unit was determ, ined by distinct aggregates of clay building material that appear to have been thrown into the pit as well. The material that was rewoved was loamy and loaded with bones, very easy to trowel through, which is why the basal boundary of the unit was the much more firm clayey material. So, was the pit filled by a different materials at different times? And where does this pit end.
24/8: This no longer seems to be a pit so we have eliminated 2215 (cut)

Unit description: A medium to large unit that consists mostly of bone from 003 size animals and a lower proportion of bones from 007 size animals. There is an unusual body part representation with frequent long bone fragments but very few ribs and vertebrae. Phalanges, carpals and tarsals are almost completely absent. However a number of metapodials are present in the unit and the skull is also well represented so it is not merely an absence of the primary butchery waste. The long bone fragments are of a reasonable length and could well be the remains of marrow fracturing. Burnt bone and digested bones are both rare, the amount of weathering displayed by the bone is minimal and even across the unit implying that the material had suffered little in the way of disturbance. NR 2002: Sample 1 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded as diagnostics and flot frags. The sample is very large and in keeping with the dry sieved material. It looks like a midden that lay too near the surface; originally well preserved, now rather powdery. Even here there are only two phalanx fragments and three sesamoids, although quite a few metapodial bits. There is an odd collection of fragmented astragali, three different ones. The breaks are old and appear predepositional. These are rarely broken; what's the deal? A couple of possibly shed sheep/goat teeth might indicate penning. There is a little fish. Last number = 197
