Unit 2230
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Room fill
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: 1997
In unit 2230, I excavated a corner between the internal wall and the outside wall of the house. My unit placed in the S-W corner of space 86. The Northern strip of the unit was already excavated as unit 2206, feature #150. This burial was cut throuth the internal of plaster in the small section that I excavated. Probably this plaster (white) was indicating a feature but because of the burial I only found big white lumps of plaster of which it was not possible to tell what the feature was.

In the very SW corner of the unit a solid portion of the outside wall was located that had collapsed internally in the very corner of the house. The top part of this wall comprises of white plaster like deposits. These deposits may be a part of the wall moulding and connected to the wall on the W house wall, further down/N on the wall. The remains of the collapsed wall comprised a mixture of brick-clay and mortar with large lumps of grey clay inside.
27/7/98 EW baulk removed in W. part.

Unit was trimmed and ground stone ball (X.1) regular in shape and app. 10cm in circumference was found.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: A medium-small unit, with quite a lot of fresh breaks, but of old breaks fragment sizes mostly 3 cm with a fair amount at 6-7 cm. Weathering generally at stage 3 with little variation. No gnawing and no digestion. A small proportion of bone is burnt (black and calcined) but most not. Overall impression is that material has not been rolled or reworked much, but fairly quickly deposited. This is supported by two sh/gt size vertebrae which are more intact than we often see them (spines and processes are more complete). Taxa are mainly 03 size with fewer 07 size and a couple of 02 size long bone fragments. 03 represented by long bones, ribs, vertebrae (subadult), long bones and skull/teeth fragments but no toes (but some metapodia). 07 represented by long bones, ribs, a vertebra, a scapula, two fragments of Bos pelvis and two fragments of Bos metapodia, a tiny bit of skull but no teeth. In general, very few teeth fragments and an absence of toes. Unit seems to represent the debris from mixed daily consumption / processing. It's not really midden like and not fill-like; maybe BACH area has different fill to North and South areas? (since this unit is called room fill on unit sheet). 4mm flotation sample (no. 1) sorted for diagnostics only since >100 pieces in dry sieve sample. One dog tooth found here.
