Unit 22638

Category: Layer    dug in 2015

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: ash layer,fuel deposit

Data Category Information: Description: fire spots (non-structured); Deposition: heterogeneous

Discussion: This unit is within a small sideroom of NE corner. It was recognized as a separate unit due to its dark grey/black ash color and texture. We believe it was either something within the room that was burnt, or a fuel deposit for the fire. There is a raised threshold partition which separated this unit from the rest of the building and it is on top of a wheat cluster. It was excavated using trowels. About halfway through excavation of the unit, archaeobotanical specialists were called to lift the concentrated deposits of new type wheat piled against the north wall (u. 22656). The unit was prioritized because of the concentration of organic material. It lies directly on top of a layer of in situ wheat grains (u. 22656) which were piled on the floor at the time of burning. Because of the heat needed to incinerate the walls & room fill to the degree we remarked-- in contrast to the low heat needed to preserve the wheat below, this layer may have functioned to insulate the grains below.
