Unit 22635

Category: Layer    dug in 2015

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: infill of B. 131

Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: heterogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit

Discussion: This unit is a filling deposit much like u. 22617, though we are interpreting u. 22635 as an infill of B. 131 (versus u. 22617-- the foundation fill of B. 129) because of the evidence for activity at what we called the basal boundary of u. 22617 (specifically, an identifiably discrete dumping event [u. 22628] and antlers in the NW corner of sp. 500… plus the fill becoming higher in clay content.) This unit reflects very different effects of burning across the expance-- toward the W, it is very ashy & loose, while toward the SE it is dry & baked, and much more pink-orange in color (rather than orange & black). It was highly processed and contained relatively few finds for its volume, and compared to other burned buildings-- though 2 polka dot-painted figurines were remarkable. It was excavated by a combination of pick, trowel, and brush, depending on how close we came to wall & floor plaster. It was designated a priority unit in order to compare with the room fill of B. 77.
