Interpretive Categories: burial fill

Discussion: This is the burial fill for burial F. 7956, an interment of the secondarily-deposited remains of at least five individuals, and the primary burial of an adolescent. It is extremely dark, perhaps as a result of the burning above, which actually turned the first 10 cm of this burial fill very orange, dry, and loose. The orange color and looseness is how the unit was recognized from the surrounding plaster floor u. 22677. The fill contained four wooden bowls, some of which seemed to contain skeletal elements, and one of which (X1) contained some kind of orange material that was sampled (S4). It was not fully excavated in 2015 due to time restrictions, but was treated by the conservation team so it will preserve for excavation in 2016.

2016: Mixed fill which contains a lot of charcoal & other occupation debris-characteristic of midden deposits & it is likely that this has been cut through midden deposits (visible in side of cut) which are part of midden to East of B.131 & backfilled with this material. There was a lot of backfill below the articulated remains (particularly at north of cut) which might suggest cut was left open for a while, it was cut through loose deposits which slumped into the cut while human remains were deposited or that it was partly backfilled before remains were laid. In the feature.

"Bowl" x5 found in middle of cut. "Bowl" x6 found north-east of sk. 31706 cranium.
