Unit 2281

Category: layer    dug in 1998

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: Platform,Room fill

Data Category Information: none

Discussion: The Xfinds not included here were all switched to unit 2296 (AMV 6/99)

This unit consists of fine moist bricky fill (reddish to brown) which was collected (as the same unit number) with white plaster which was also part of the deposit. This white plaster was also over these deposits in larger patches.

Note: Flot S1 was from the platform (15L.)
Flot S5 was from the whole surface.
Flot S13 was from the Ehalf of the unit (15L.) because the high density of bones and organic material in general.

Unit 2281 has extended towards the West. It goes all the way to the interior wall (F.161). Sample #6 was taken (Flotation) because it contains a lot of organic materials, charcoal, some bone. This area of 2281 is close to the interior wall but also to F 164. It is possible that this kind of deposit continues under or surrounding F.164.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: This material did not come in together, but rather in dribs and drabs over a month; therefore the analysis and numbering may be a bit disjointed. A medium-sized unit. Less than 10% burning, generally fresh looking, very little visible digestion. Some large (15-20 cm) pieces. Long bone fragments generally longer than normal. Some cattle-sized bone, especially many skull fragments (weathered condition, but this is probably due to recent exposure), also long bone, two ribs, a distal humerus, an equid scapula, and an extremely large cattle atlas fragment. Sheep-size bone is more plentiful; including long bone, ribs, teeth, phalanges. There were three fragments of identifiable bird bone. A nearly complete human scapula was in with the animal bone; it is possibly post-Neolithic, and not part of the scattered female skeleton that the human bone lab has found in this unit. It was the largest and freshest of all the bone in the unit. There is also a human axis (second vertebra) which may belong to the Neolithic female. The unit is similar to the middeny material around 2296. LY 2001: Additional material was studied in 2001, fragmentation was average, sheep/goat was the most common species but cattle and pig are also present. A significant proportion of the material was made up of a fragmented caprine skull and one scapula came from a fairly large animal. A fragmented pubis and a fibula belonging to a human was pulled. 4mm flotation samples 5 and 13 were recorded for diagnostics only. Last number = 286
