Unit 23426

Category: Layer    dug in 2017

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: Floor packing,Room infill

Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: heterogeneous

Description: U23426 was excavated for 10-20 cm within space 576 for the tops of the emmerging walls of the building below to be revealed. The excavation stopped arbitrarily. U23426 had a different thickness in the North from the South, having a much more substantial volume towards the North. In the North the thickness of this unit ranged from 5cm in the southern part, to 30cm in the middle and about 20cm at the Northern most part.

Discussion: Under floors U23411 and U23421, U23426 appeared rough and mixed. The first 2-5cm were of grey, white and yellow colours, including chunks of plaster, sandy bits of broken mudbrick and grey ashy areas. These gave the impression of compacted debris, which must have been used for the packing of floors U23411 and U23421 to be layed upon U23426. The following 11cm were of dark yellow colour and very sandy; they may have resulted from some pise collapse, or pise-like material was used for this room infill. The following 4-10cm was an ashy mixture with plastery bits, under which chunks of mudbrick with marl and pise-like material was found. The excavation of this room infill stopped arbitrarily as the aim of exposing the structural architecture below the earliest floor of Western 52 was achieved.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
