Unit 23443
Category: Layer dug in 2017
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Floor,Platform surface
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: raised area (platform); Material: mix (dark grey&white); Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Description: U23443 was identified in the East of Platform F7638, but also partially and in patches in the West; especially well it survived in the corners between the western wall (F7776), the southern bench (F2184) and the northern wall (F7766).
Discussion: U23443 was a series of floors built of mudplaster mixed with lime plaster and coated on top with limeplaster. Because of fire lit directly on top of U23443, on its eastern part, U23443 was black and grey (burnt) in the East at the upper part; while orange and dark brown in the West and in the lower eastern parts. Sample S2 for flotation was taken from the black burnt part; while sample S3 for flotation was taken from the lower (about 3-4cm) orange part.
U23443 was found across the entire length of Platform 7638, from the North to the South; also it was possible to see U23443 continuing towards the South, on the small part, left East of Bench F2184, bridging the two platforms (F7638 in the North with F7637 in the South), and partially covering the "eastern step extension" of Platform F7637, at the level of U23453. Namely, U23443 was found to partially cover the plastered surface of U23453 on its NE part, E-SE of Bench F2184.
Consistency: Loose at the West; friable at the East
Colour: Orange in the West; black and grey in the East
Texture: Sand
Bedding: Compound parallel layers
Inclusions: 25% small pieces of charcoal; 25% small pieces of aggregates
Post-depositional Features: Compaction from floors above; largely destroyed in the West, surviving only in the SW and NW corners between Bench F2184 and western Wall F 7776; and northern Wall F7766 and western Wall F.7776.
Basal Boundary: Constructional, levelled, diffused, faint, smooth at places, irregular at others, inclined from the West to the East; surfaces beneath are rough at places and smooth at others.
