Category: Layer dug in 2017
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Series of thin plastered floors and packings
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: mix (dark grey&white); Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Description: This is a series of thin plastered surfaces and their packing in the central, eastern Building 52, space 94.
Discussion: U23812 was a series of very thin lime plastered floors and their very light brown or pink (because of heating) packings. They were all very similar: plastered and replastered numerous times, each one of the seven layers that it was possible to distinguish with the 3cm of excavation. The excavation of these layers stopped at a floor which was mildly whiter and felt more compact in the West, as all of the U23812 floor surfaces had been severely burnt in the West.
Consistency: Friable in the West; Compact in the East
Colour: Black-grey in the West; White in the East
Texture: Sand
Bedding: Very think plastered surfaces and make up
Inclusions: Predominantly charcoal in the West; some granules of aggregates in the East
Post-depositional Features: Compaction from layers above; severe, persistent and repeated fire in the West
Basal Boundary: Constructional, distinct, smooth, flat, and even
