Unit 2843
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: .65 x .23 m x 5-12 mm thick
Discussion: (2843) appears to represent outer part of of roof "dome" of oven or outer lining not differentiated at first from (2848) which is the same material but collapsed. Realised that this is in situ material after partial excavation. Lining material appears distinct from material forming side and back of oven. (2843) partially excavated out of sequence in error. Difference between (2843) and (2860) may be one of differential heating or may represent difference in initial material used reacting differently to heating.
Recognition: Initially thought to be part of layer previously identified in 1997 season by CC, recog. from plans, see discussion.
Definition: Well defined- although edges as planned represent where layer visible within oven structure.
Execution: Trowel- 1/2 sectioned initially.
Condition: Dry and sunny.
Consistency: loose
Colour: 10 YR 4/4 dark yellowish brown (when dry)
Texture: fine silt
Bedding: massive
Inclusions:
Post-depositional Features:
Basal Boundary: abrupyt, distinct/constructional or change in deposit is difference between (2843) and (2860) due to initial differences in deposits or differential firing?/smooth

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
