Discussion: Outer structure of oven. Very clear and distinct from parts of oven affected by heat, also filling cut for oven where cut into wall, possibly originally not distinct from matwerial forming "outer lining" of oven.
Sample 3 = block sample of oven wall (2870) and (2860/2843).
Recognition: Visible before excavation began. Different colour to material making up lining- no colour change due to heating and different shape.
Definition: Well defined.
Execution: Trowel and pick, 1/2 sectioned initially.
Condition: Dry, in relatively good condition but some cracks through top to bottom. Dry/sunny.
Consistency: loose (friable to firm)
Colour: 10 YR 5/3 brown (dry) and 10 YR 5/4 yellowish brown (moist)
Texture: clayey fine silt
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: occasional white flecks-strands - salt?
Post-depositional Features: n/a
Basal Boundary: abrupt/fairly sharp ?
