Discussion: A very loose, gritty, but soft deposit, with micro fauna in it. The "red textile" deposit was removed from here last year leaviong 2 parts of (2895) to N and S. There may be more below. The S part tips down against a lump of plaster which may be part of (2872).

Most of S part went as archive while the more contaminated bit that had fallen over the section went as a faunal sample. However, the archive was probably contaminated so a new one, sample 3, was taken from the N part to replace it. Samples 2 and 4 will be sorted for micro fauna before being floated, both because of delicacy of bones and for comaprison between floated and unfloated micro fauna.

This unit is convolute/interdigitated with (3108), or there is probably more to come. If it is owl pellets, it suggests they were deposited soon after the room fill, falling into interstices before they filled with general soil. This is eroded brick and mortar from the adjacent wall, with micro fauna from a roosting owl on the decaying wall.

Recognition: Gritty loose layer with micro fauna. Distinctive, gritty, white and grey.

Definition: Clear.

Execution: Leaf trowel/trowel/brush.

Condition: Sheltered.

Consistency: loose

Colour: 2.5 YR 6/3 light yellowish brown, looks more light grey, 30 % white

Texture: silty clay aggregates which will powder

Bedding: massive

Inclusions: micro fauna 2% ?, salts 5-10%

Post-depositional Features: heavy salting, very occasional roots

Basal Boundary: clear in general, but not so clear in N part. Sloping but straightforward in S, convolute at S edge of Npart. A suspicion of some on S side of moulding to S of crawlhole, which adds to convolute/interdigitated nature.
