Unit 30002
Category: Layer dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Compacted, mudbrick-like packing, truncated
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: floor (packing only); Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: Ridge of compacted, mudbrick-like materials laying on top of grey floors and a very small ashy spread (probably hearth F.7607 rake-out accumulation). It appears truncated in two of its sides and highly disturbed by animal burrowing in another, giving the impression of an isolated unit, non-related to the contexts around it. From the nature of this deposit (compacted fine-grained sediments) and its location, by the edge of old hearth F.7607, we could hypothesise that this was initially the edge/lip of a fire installation that became later truncated when the hearth fell in disuse and was dismantled.
The lower boundary is marked by a high concentration of gypsum nodules of ca.1-3mm size. This pattern has been found in other parts of the building, with gypsum reprecipitation marking the contact between units. Although this is part of post-depositional processes, this phenomenon might be worth studying further in the future, as it might be indicative of different materials and uses of space.
Consistency: Compact.
Colour: Light greyish brown.
Texture: Clay loam.
Bedding: Massive.
Inclusions: Few lenses of fine sands.
Post-depositional Features: Extensively disturbed by rodent burrowing; frequent gypsum salts.
Basal Boundary: Sharp, distinct, smooth, anthropic/constructional.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
