Unit 30080
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: reused surface
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: raised area (platform); Material: white clay; Basal Spit: unpainted
Description: concentration of scorching at centre. Thickness measured at south where unit was thickest. At the centre of the deposit 30080 thinned to0.02m
DF 19-7-16 sat directly on to (though overlapped the edges) scorching of early surface 32389. showing continued and prolonged presence and use of a hearth in this area.
Discussion: revealed by removal of units 30048 30049 3005130054 a sub-circulat area of scorched plaster, assigned the number : 30080 it was considered a 'fill' of hearth F7957 associated with an earlier phase of use of the feature but possibly used in the later phase represented by 30048 etc. Weathering of 30080 showed that it continued underneath units 30055 30064 30065; units associated with intermedite and earlier phases of use. This led to a re-evaluation of 30080 as an earlier plaster surface reused as a base for the hearth. However, whilst dismantiling the relationships at the NE corner of the hearth a further re-evaluation of 30080 has taken place. Returning to the earlier interpretation it was seen that 30080 though larger than thought at first was an early use horizon underlying early structural elements 30057 30060 and respecting others: 32325 32338. Excavation continues with this interpretation in mind.
Excavation revealed that 30080 actually belonged to the earliest phase of use and was reused throughout use-life of hearth
Particularly significant was the revelation that 30093 overlay 30080, meaning that 30080 was a very early deposit associated with the initial use of Hearth F7957, as represented by 32338, which 30093 extended
