Unit 30219

Category: Layer    dug in 2013

Area: TPC

Interpretive Categories: Infill of room

Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: heterogeneous

Discussion: This unit was recognized beneath u.20271 because of the discernment of walls f.3948 and f.3984. It represents the fill, over a long period of time, of sp. 509-- the interior of a Roman building (as suggested by the mud-brick style and the type of plaster on the walls.) The real basal boundary of this unit was dug through in an effort to move quickly through the late-period materials-- the top of occupation layer of the building-- or the initial fill deposit after burning (a deposit of ash) was passed through in some places by the large crew brought in. Therefore the basal boundary of the fill may in some cases actually descend into the heavily burnt layer 30246.

In this large deposit, we found a huge amount of pottery, as well as bone, groundstone, a burnt beam of wood (sampled) and some pieces of copper-- all reinforcing the fact that this is quite a late deposit of material, mostly consisting of pieces of Roman mud-brick which has tumbled and collapsed over time.

Consistency: friable

Colour: greyish brown-- burnt to black in some places

Texture: silty clay loam

Bedding: composite

Inclusions: charcoal, plaster, ash, Roman mud-brick material

Post-depositional Features: animal burrows

Basal Boundary: clear where we came down on f. 3993-- less clear elsewhere
