Unit 30247
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: TPC
Interpretive Categories: Bin fill,Oven ash
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: bin; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Discussion: This unit represents a homogenous deposit of essentially pure ash and charcoal inside a constructed feature (3993). What is interesting is that the floor beneath it, a plastered surface-- although it is worn and poorly preserved-- is not burnt! So this ash and charcoal was probably deposited from somwhere else in the space, leaving the function of 3993 essentially enigmatic. It would be good to know what these ashes are composed of- is it possible that the stored contents of f. 3993 could have carbonized when exposed to heat without the plaster below these contents burning? The unit was excavated gently by trowel.
Consistency: extremely loose
Colour: black and VERY dark brown
Texture: ash
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: charcoal, some bits of plaster
Post-depositional Features: possible truncation to W edge-- maybe by wall collapse?
Basal Boundary: clear-- came down on plastered surface

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
