Unit 30300

Category: Layer    dug in 2013

Area: South

Interpretive Categories: Make-up layer

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous

Discussion: Unit lies above a patchy plaster floor. Where above floor, the boundary is sharp, but in areas of eroded floor the boundary is inferred based on the general floor shape and soil color, or arbitrary (SE corner).

The unit's coloring pointed to it being a make-up layer rather than plaster and exposed bits of plaster corroborated this hypothesis. It's very weathered so in several areas excavation stopped at the level at which plaster would have been present, given better conditions.

The west part of the unit, which has nearly no exposed floors, had more charcoal and small rock inclusions than did other areas. The NE corner also shows an outline of a bin, or what appears to be a bin. This will be excavated as units 30309 (infill) and 30310 (superstructure), part of feature 7250.

The SE corner of the unit was very difficult to excavate, there being no clear boundary between layers. We stopped above what appears to be an orange-colored layer.

Consistency: Firm, but fragments easily into clumps.

Colour: Light grey to light brown.

Texture: Silty-clay.

Bedding: Massive.

Inclusions: plaster, charcoal.

Post-depositional Features: Heavy weathering, animal burrows.

Basal Boundary: Varies across unit. See description area below.
