Unit 3120
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: brick
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: building; Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.52 x 0.32 x 0.134
Description: methodology / description same as / copied from (2879)
Discussion: (3120) represents two courses of bricks in wall [56] which were surrounded by layers of mortar, (3121) and richer, infilling material (3119). The material of these bricks was very similar to that of (2879) excavated with the upper two courses of the wall, so was not described separately
Recognition: Clearly different colour and texture of bricks, separated by mortar from the wall [70] to the east
Definition: Distinctly defined from surrounding units
Execution: Trowel and pick
Condition: Dry and crumbly
Consistency: Firm
Colour: Light yellowish brown 10 YR 6/4
Texture: Sandy silt loam
Bedding: Massive
Inclusions: 2 % Charcoal (flecks and small pieces); 2% clay (10 YR 6/6 brownish yellow) (flecks small and medium pieces); 2% plant silicates; <2% plaster (flecks) occasional hackberries
Post-depositional Features: salt crystals and animal burrows
Basal Boundary: The basal boundary was sharp and constructional, so clearly defined. The surface between bricks and mortar was slightly uneven, but marked by salt crystalisation.
