Unit 31221
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: Trench 5
Interpretive Categories: Activity surface and fill,Fill
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: U. 31221 is fill continuing from the surface on which U. 18372 (mudbrick structure) and the groundstone slab (X1, 31210) were situated. The top surface most likely was an activity area that was directly situated on top of fill (see unit sheet 31210).
The unit was first excavated in the middle and NW parts of the building. Later it was decided that a limited sondage in the eastern half next to buttresses 3353 and 3365 would be a better way to explore the possible floor phases.
The fill itself did not yield surprises. However, the basal boundary was distinct, with red-brown silt forming a compacted surface different from the fill that characterizes the unit. See 31224.
NB: flotation sample S. 13 from U. 31210 extends into 31221 and can be used as this unit's sample.
Consistency: Heterogeneous; mix of compact (dark greyish brown), firm (yellowish-grey) and soft (light yellowish clay)
