Unit 31224
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: Trench 5
Interpretive Categories: activity surface and room fill, floor
Data Category Information: none
Description: 1-7, upper layer: compact reddish-brown silt with lumps of very firm, rubbery dark clay materials mixed heterogenously. No inclusions or post depositional feature. Clear basal boundary.
Sondage:
- red silt (compact) ground stone x1-x3
- greyish-brown silt (few finds, softer)
- light grey/beige clay (plaster?)
1-7 lower layer: nearly sterile homogenous soft grey-brown silt with few finds, no inclusions no post depositonal features. Clear basal boundary with u 31238
Discussion: The unit continues the sondage begun in u. 31221. The sondage is defined by artificial sections in the west and north and by buttresses in the east (f. 3353) and south (f. 3365). The brick and mortar lines finish at the upper levels of this unit. Top levels were defined by the compact reddish-brown silt surface, which also was associated with groundstones (x1-x3). X1 is the most substantical of these stones and underneath it were found phytoliths (S 3) and fine grains of orange pigment (S 4). In sum the top 5 cm of the fill probably one an actively surface similar to that found on top of u. 31210.
NB: x1 of u. 31238, together with its samples s.3, s.4 and s.6, in fact belongs to this unit (31224)! See unit sheet 31238 and diary entry TMK 27/8/2013.
Below the reddish-brown top layer, I encountered 10 cm of sterile soil with very few animal bone and pottery finds. This layer is uncompacted, suggesting little use. Probably a room fill. Ends with a clear basal boundary (see u. 31238).

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
