Interpretive Categories: oven lining

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: approx. 0.45 m E-W x 0.5 m N-S, up to 10 mm thick

Discussion: Crumbly reddish yellow burnt lining of oven F.268 seems to be made of different material from oven structure itself not just be made of differential burning. The portions missing could constitute inclusions in backfill (3137) possibly these fell off during backfilling.

Deposits (3122), (3136) are interpreted as collapsed roof (3373) and (3136) is probably same material as this unit.

Recognition: Bright orange + yellow so stands out against fills of oven 268, also breaks of along interface with fills quite easily.

Definition: Extends around inside of oven.

Execution: Leaf, 1/2 sectioned, difficult to completely excavate while rest of oven was still intact.

Condition: Dry, dark.

Consistency: soft

Colour: from 7.5 YR 7/8 reddish yellow fading through yellow into 10 YR 7/3 very pale brown (differential burning)

Texture: silt 80%, very fine sand 20%

Bedding: layered, parallell

Inclusions: frequent (40% chaff) small phytoliths or burnt out hollows

Post-depositional Features: scorched inside, large pieces collapsed to W and small areas missing throughout, truncated in centre by (3373) collapse of roof

Basal Boundary: constructional/anthropogenic/distinct/smooth/curved/surface: fairly smooth
