Interpretive Categories: fire debris

Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple

Dimensions: 0.16 m E-W x 0.08 m N-S, max. 15 mm thick

Discussion: Thought to be fire debris raked out from oven. This unit is thought to be same as (3147), ashy deposit within oven F.268. However, it only touched (3147) and is not actually continous. To be on the safe side a separate unit no. was given to this. It had to be 100% archive sampled as there was so little of it, the same with (3147). However the specialists should be able to take small quantities out of this to compare, it is very rich in burnt organics so results should be interesting.

It is also thought to be the same as unit (2820) which was excavated last year (1997) leaving a small running section going into the oven. (3157)'s relationship to both these other units is important as if it is the same as (3147) it implies that the fire debris is being raked out of the oven as it overlies lip (broken) of the area. If it is the same as (2820) it ties the whole oven sequence of fills in with the stratigraphy of the surrounding area. The rest of the fills seem to be truncated to the north (we think by Roddy as no cut feature appears near there) so the only other stratigraphic relationship is with the top fill (3154) and the fill of bin F.256.

Recognition: Has been visible since I started this area but when (3147) was revealed it looked startling similar and although doesn't actually join up it does touch. Roddy's report mentions ashy deposit (2820) which was excavated except for a small running section going into the oven. It seems likely he is talking about this deposit. Surface: sloping down to N, smooth but probably trowelled lots of times.

Definition: Overlies broken edge of oven floor and is an irregular shaped patch to N of centre of oven.

Execution: Leaf. 100% archived.

Condition: Dry, under cover.

Consistency: loose

Colour: 10 YR 4/2 dark greyish brown

Texture: ash 80% silt 20%

Bedding: massive

Inclusions: 50% charcoal frags mostly 10 x 5 mm but up to 15 x 15 mm, occasional 5% salt flecks 1 mm diameter, moderate 10% small lumps up to 10 mm of burnt plaster or silt yellow/orange

Post-depositional Features: occasional salts, probabl been cleaned off lots of times by us as was exposed last year (1997) so slight chance of contamination of archive sample1 although I scimmed it with a leaf first

Basal Boundary: sharp/anthropogenic/smooth/slopoing down to north

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
