Unit 3305
Category: Cut dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Foundation cut
Data Category Information: Description: foundation trench
Dimensions: 0.83 x 0.38 x 0.55 m
Description: A steeply stepped cut through the deposits beneath wall 78, descending from East to West. Bordered on the Western side by wall 58.
Discussion: 3305 represents a cut beneath 3 layers of 'fill' excavated in 1998 - 3173, 3194, and 3301 - which seems to have provided a foundation for wall 56 which sat above them. The cut was defined by a stepping down of the deposits to the Eastern side of it, the lowest of which 3347 had tumbled down into the bottom of the cut. This changes the earlier interpretation from the section drawing 96/186, that a foundation cut for wall 36 extended deeper and lay directly above wall 281. It now seems as if this cut 1043 represents another, earlier cut for yet another wall.
Shape: Bounded by walls to the North and East, stepped down to the West, and cut by excavation to the South. What remained of the cut was roughly rectangular in plan.
Sides: The sides were vertical to the North and West, stepped to East and have been previously excavated to the South.
Base Break: The western side of the cut sloped down into the base, meeting it an angle of about 140 degrees.
Base: The base was fairly smooth and flat, bounded by walls to the North and West curved from NW to SE on its Eastern side and cut by excavation to the South.
Orientation: Difficult to orientate because it has been cut by excavation but seemed to be from East to West.
