Unit 3301
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Infill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: foundation cut; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Dimensions: 0.49 x 0.42 x 0.21 m
Discussion: 3301 represents the bricky fill dumped at the base of cut 3305. This seems to have been the foundation cut for wall 56, rather than the deeper cut 1043 that was originally thought to have provided the same purpose. The large chunks of brick were mixed with other constructional debris - plaster and clay, and seem to have been the first episode of deposition in this foundation cut.
Recognition: More mixed, bricky and plaster filled from the layer above.
Definition: Defined by a very irregular and truncated boundary.
Execution: Trowel and pick.
Condition: Dry and crumbly.
Consistency: Firm.
Colour: 10YR 6/4 light yellowish brown.
Texture: Sandy clayey silt loam.
Bedding: Massive.
Inclusions: 3% charcoal (flecks, small and medium sized pieces); 3% plaster (flecks and larger lumps); <2% shell; 2% tiny pebbles; 2%clay (small pieces)
Post-depositional Features: Saly crystalisation and animal burrowing.
Basal Boundary: Excavation of this unit was ended when i came upon a brick which was beneath the wall 58 to the West and this deposit. The basal boundary was therefore distinct and constructional (although unexpected !), although some of the deposit above was embedded in the brick beneath.
