Unit 3326
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: fire debris
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple
Dimensions: 0.66 m N-S x 0.35 m E-W x max 10 mm
Discussion: Ashy layer same as (3316) to E. Some kind of fire debris although from which fire installation it is uncertain. It runs underneath walls of bin 257 although does not extend inside it was probably truncated by bin cut (3352).
Only enough to archive sample so no flot.
Recognition: The northern end of this deposit was recognised last year, the S area was revealed when (3328), (3329) and (3309) were removed. It was a fairly soft mid-grey ashy deposit with frequent charcoal and salts. It tapered and sloped down to the N. It was more compact and thinner in N, but not surprising because it had been cleaned and trampled many times. Surface uneven where it is under bin walls.
Definition: Continues with L.O.E in E. Clear boundaries elsewhere except basal boundary as another ash layer is showing through floor layers.
Execution: Leaf. Not fully excavated (left in baulk).
Condition: Covered, dry, half had been exposed/half not so possibly of some conatmination of archive sample.
Consistency: friable
Colour: 7.5 YR 6/1 grey
Texture: sand 10%, ash 60%, silt 30%
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: frequent 20% charcoal flecks + frags. 5-20 mm and smaller flecks <1 mm, moderate white salts <2 mm, (moderate) 5% orange flecks <1 mm 2%, phytoliths small <3%
Post-depositional Features: salts, possibly truncated to S by bin cut
Basal Boundary: anthropogenic/abrupt/smooth to N/irregular to S

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
