Unit 3373
Category: cut dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: collapsed oven roof
Data Category Information: Description: basin
Dimensions: c 0.2m diam x c 40 mm thick
Discussion: Collapse of oven roof, which was echoed in shape by fragments of oven roof material inside oven. (3132, 3126).
Probably accidental collapse after backfilling of oven maybe due to weight on top of oven after contents have settled and compressed. see sketch above.
Alternatively there may have been a hole in the oven made for some specific purpose and its edges have worn away.
Stratigraphically therefore I can't put 'cut' 3373 directly below 3136 although I think its earlier. It has to go under 2796 fill of bin 256.
Post ex 2001
I've put cut under 3136 on the matrix on the interpretation that this hole was made through collapse of the roof, obviously no proof of this but based on fact that we have no comparative ovens with openings at top as well as side (I realise we have no complete ovens, this is based on modern comparisons too) SF.
Recognition: seen at beginning of 1998 excavations and confirmed when pieces of collapsed roof found within oven.
