Unit 3641
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: ashy fill
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: max 0.68 m N-S x 0.70 m E-W
Discussion: This layer was found while excavating infill (3370). It did get slightly overdug so the N edge of the unit is artificial. This seems to be an ashy fill with brick in it. Because the ash is soft, it has been disturbed by animals quite a lot so it has been hard to get the extent of different materials within the unit. The excavation of the unit started with the brick shown on the sketch. On the W part of the brick mortary stuff came out with phytoliths underneath. Underneath the phytoliths was the ashy layer. It was hard to distinguish the mortar and the ashy layer from each other at the surface because they had the same colour. The bear claw was found in this unit so while excavating I was expecting some hints about the bear claw. But the unit was fairly sterile. This ashy stuff seems to be on top of some kind of collapse, which could be in a pit.
After further excavation of (3714) and (3718) it was understod that there was no sign of a cut.
After the flotation samples were looked at by the specialists some interesting facts came through. First of all, the bones found in the ashy deposit had some bones in it which obviously were treated by some heat (heat affected). The bear claw was found in the ashy layer but it was not treated with heat. So it might be possible that the bear claw fell in to the deposit. Generally both of the flotation samples were very sterile.
Recognition: Recognised by an ashy layer with a brick in the middle next to layer (3370).
Definition: Ashy layer defined by wall to W, by plaster lining to SE.
Execution: Leaf trowel and trowel.
Condition: Dry.
Consistency: the brick inside the layer is quite firm, but the layer itself is friable
Colour: 10 YR 5/1 gray
Texture: ashy silt
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: it has a mudbrick within the layer which takes about 30% of the whole layer, the colour of the brick is 10 YR 6/3 pale brown, otherwise that <2% small flecks of charcoal, some hackberries
Post-depositional Features: it has salt flecks within but the major problem is all the animal holes
Basal Boundary: sharp

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: This is the fill around the bear claw (unit 3603) taken as flotation samples. Sample 1 is a bricky fill (turned out to be a single brick), and sample 6 is the ashy fill from which the claw actually came. The >4mm flot samples are done from each. Sample 1 consists of 2 fragments, one a phalanx 1 of a sheep/goat, the other undiagnostic. Both have slight surface etching, from weathering/battering? Not burnt. Sample 6 has more fragments but still a very small unit. One diagnostic = a sh/gt phal 1 frag. One piece of cow-size, rest is sheep-size. One piece burnt black but some others seem heat treated and brown colour. Condition good. Lat number = F11.Figurine Records: No GroundStone Records: No Heavy Residue Records: No Microfaunal Records: No
