Category: layer    dug in 1998

Area: South

Site Sketch: Click here to open in a new window

Interpretive Categories: collapse

Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: heterogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit

Dimensions: c.0.6 x 0.5 x 0.05 m

Discussion: This collapse was lying under the ashy layer (3641). It's not actually a layer but parts of collapsed material like mortar, plaster and brick. Everything has been very much disturbed so it was hard to distinguish the real dimensions of the collapsed matter. After this was dug out, it was clearly understood that this material does not lie in a pit, so the bear claw does not either.

Recognition: A collapse that was recognised before ashy layer (3641) was out, but that became clearer when the unit was finished. Recognition was made by the difference of colour and texture.

Definition: Defined by wall at W, cuts on other places.

Execution: Trowel and leaf trowel.

Condition: Dry.

Consistency: firm

Colour: colour of the collapsed plaster is 2.5 Y 8/1 white; colllapsed mortar 10 YR 6/2 light brownish grey; collapsed soil 10 YR 5/4 brown and it has 10 YR 5/4 dark grayish brown clayish stuff in it

Texture: clay loam

Bedding: massive, but the collpased plaster was layered with fine lenses

Inclusions: 10% flecks of charcoal, 15-20% building material fragments (like mortar, plaster, brick), 20% grey clayish deposit

Post-depositional Features: disturbance by animals

Basal Boundary: sharp
