Unit 3702
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: dump,infill
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: coarsely bedded (dumps)
Dimensions: 2.6 m by 3.2 m by 15 cm
Discussion: Unlike layers above in the midden deposit, this layer is notably thicker and I had to take off a lot before finding a difference in the deposit. The layer still contained similar materials and inclusions but is layer in comparison to later deposits (?). It may be that this end has larger deposits which creates the E to W slope.
Similarly to (3366) the S end of this layer contains more inclusions, a lot of bricky material, bones, clay balls, 2 bones plus a figurine (so far) and charcoal + shell.
We have now begun to take the layer down further starting from the SE corner where there is again a large spread of charcoal in the layer underneath. At the S end of the layer there was a lot of bone at the interface.
On taking the N end down further, there were also more inclusions; coprolite, larger lumps of charcoal, a few hackberries, lump of plaster + building material, bone and an animal hole in the NE corner.
Recognition: Layer (3702) lay beneath (3366) and was mattocked down from the E end until a small cluster of charcoal was discovered (3705), once this was removed a spread of grey ash was found beneath it and the horizon at which it was followed out. This horizon can be distinguished from (3702) as it contained larger fragments of charcoal and was darker greyer with more bone. (3702) itself is very similar to the N end of (3366), ie not many inclusions, small flecks of charcoal, though lower down nearer the interface of the layer below , it has a lot of bone and charcoal lumps, and large lumps of building material.
Definition: North, midden section under wall; East, wall of space 117; South wall 270; West.
Execution: Mattock, hoe, trowel.
Condition: Dry on surface.
Consistency: firm
Colour: general colour 2.5 Y 5/2 grayish brown, 5/3 light olive brown, small patches of 10 YR 6/6 brownish yellow
Texture: clay loam/ silty clay loam
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: clay ball fragments occasionally, obsidian chips, <2% hackberries in occasional clusters, large fragments of charcoal c. 2 cm, brick (burnt) N end 10-20% in places, plaster and often building material, phytoliths <2%, occasional, natural stone rare, bone, large and very frequent in N end c. 10% concentration in areas
Post-depositional Features: rare roots
Basal Boundary: distinctness of basal boundary gradual/diffuse, contrast distinct-faint, mainly in size of inclusions and quantity; layer below has larger charcoal fragments and very large bones; because the boundary is diffuse I have probably skimmed the surface of the underlying layer; form is wavy and slope down from E to W and N to S

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
