Dimensions: 0.55 m N-S x [0.90] m E-W; up to 0.06 m thick 

 

Discussion: Layer of silty clay, mixed deposit, predominantly brown but with grey and pale cream (light grey Munsell) plaster deposits, lumps (up to 15%) presumably make up layer to floors above (thick + mixed deposit), thins towards N edge, continues to W as (3717). 

 

Recognition: Recognised during excavation of floor layers above or after floor layers excavated. 

Definition: Clearly defined on N side, to E side unit defined by baulk, layer as a whole does not appear to run through the baulk but whether it did originally, who knows? To W unit defined by grid, layer as a whole continues to N, but W edge yet to be defined, may continue into space 151. To S defined by wall. 

Execution: Trowel and handpick. 

Condition: Dry. 

Consistency: friable 

Colour: 10 YR 6/3 pale brown (dry) also 10 YR 5/2 greyish brown (dry); 10 YR 7/2 light grey (dry) 

Texture: silty clay 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: clay ball, occ. >2% charcoal flecks, 15% large frags. of plaster and darker grey deposits 

Post-depositional Features: 2% salt flecks 

Basal Boundary: abrupt/distinct/smooth to wavy/incline as for surface
