Unit 3708
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: occupation deposit
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple
Dimensions: 1.10 m E-W x 0.50 m N-S; approx. 0.01 to 0.03 m thick
Discussion: Not sure of interpretation for this deposit, but from colour + inclusions some kind of occupation deposit possibly stratigraphically below the storage bin in the NW corner but unfortunately the relationships are rather tenuous, at the N edge by the bin cut the unit is no more than a centimetre thick.
Eventually took out remnant of (3708) left in for micro.morph. samples. (06/09/98).
nb. sample 8 from plan on very edge of deposit, if anomalous result then could transfer to infill (3787) below.
Recognition: Recognised initially when TC excavating floors in this part of the space; distinctive colour/consistency, grey/crumbly.
Definition: Clear and well defined, once had brushed clean and leaf trowelled marginally more difficult to define NE side where overlying (apparently) grey infill.
Execution: Trowel.
Condition: Dry.
Consistency: loose to friable (unit noticably crumbly, lifts easily off horizon at base, comes away in small lumps)
Colour: 10 YR 7/2 - 7/3 light grey to light brownish grey to 5/2 greyish brown (dry)
Texture: silty clay
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: c.>2% flecks/small charcoal; >2% flecks/small frags. bone also small % of ash
Post-depositional Features: occasional 2% salt flecks
Basal Boundary: abrupt/distinct/smooth to wavy/inclined to E with slight concave depression

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
