Unit 3732
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: oven build
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: pise-like; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 0.72 m E/W x 0.72 m N/S x max 0.12 m thick; 0.35 m high
Discussion: Build of oven made of many alternate layers of thick white clay/plaster and thin lenses of grey silt and charcoal. The inside of the oven is scorched dark reddish brown and this is visible on outside of oven where it has been truncated by (3352). The lining (3171) seems to be of a different material (more organics) not just differential burning.
Are large lumps of charcoal accidentally introduced into build or there for a purpose. Are they organics that have been burnt to charcoal once oven is used.
Recognition: Partially seen at beginning of season but truly revealed when (3170) and (3354) excavated. Corched on inside of oven white clay/plaster with lenses of grey silt, multi layered.
Definition: Continues into baulk section for micromorph in W. Abutts wall to S 79 and wall to W 93.
Execution: Leaf, 1/2 sectioned. Oven lining (3371) excavated at same time as not strong enough to survive on its own.
Condition: Bright, covered.
Consistency: strong, but more brittle where scorched
Colour: 7.5 YR 6/2 pinkish grey; 2.5 YR 8/2 pale yellow
Texture: clay 50%, sand 10%, silt 40%
Bedding: compound layered
Inclusions: phytoliths 5% up to 3 mm long, 1% small <2 mm stones, 1% burnt clay lumps 1 mm <1% <2mm hard white lumps (salts?lime?), 1% charcoal flecks <2mm, 5% lenses up to 3 mm thick of grey silt with frequent salts + phytoliths and charcoal up to 4 mm; frequent large lumps of charcoal towards base of deposit <20 mm long and more phytoliths
Post-depositional Features: truncated by (3373) and above by (3354) and to E by (3352), occasional root actions
Basal Boundary: anthropogenic/abrupt/smooth/curved/convex; inside of oven is scroched to a dark reddish brown this is covered with (3171), also scorched, oven lining, both of these surfaces are very smooth

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
