Category: layer    dug in 1998

Area: South

Site Sketch: Click here to open in a new window

Interpretive Categories: floors,infill

Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: white clay; Deposition: composite (floor/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)

Dimensions: c. 0.8 m N-S x c. 1.0 m E-W x c. 0.02 m deep

Discussion: This layer was first interpreted as infill over floor, but during excavation at some points of the unit (the middle area) the deposit came out as very fine floors. But this is not the case for all of the unit. On the E side of the unit the deposit has an infill character to it and it is massive. In the N part of the layer there were grey clayish stuff stuck to the floor. I could not find good floor underneath this unit on the W part of the place. This whole deposit seems to be a left over of removing floors from a room. The floor I came upon is not a very clean floor.

Recognition: Distinctive colour and texture beneath collapse (3714) which looks like infill and is very similar to (3747) in colour (note that the border between (3758) and (3747) is arbitrary).

Definition: Layer of infill in the middle of space 159 bordered by excavation at S, grey floor at N and wall at E and W.

Execution: Leaf trowel.

Condition: Dry.

Consistency: firm

Colour: the main deposit colour 10 YR 7/2 light grey but there are many lenses, for colours look at bedding

Texture: silty

Bedding: there are at least 4 layers within this deposit, the top one seems to be infill, the one underneath an ashy lens which has the colour 10 YR 5/1 gray, a lighter coloured layer underneath which has the colour 10 YR 7/1 light grey and a yellow layer underneath which is 10 YR 8/2 very pale brown

Inclusions: <2% flecks of charcoal, 5% flecks of phytolith

Post-depositional Features: salts and some fine roots (lots of animal activity)

Basal Boundary: clear/sharp/anthropogenic
