Dimensions: 0.47-0.23m x 0.46-0.22 m N-S x 0.40 m deep 

 

Discussion: First layer.
Infilling in pit, SW corner of platform F239. This cut may be part of the same retrieval cut (3806). There is more plaster (larger fragments also) and hard clay lumps (larger fragments) in the lower part of the fill, but is fairly certain to be one layer. This pit has not yet got a feature number! Plaster layers are very visible at the top of the pit.

Quite similar to general infilling deposits (CC). 

 

Recognition: Change in colour from (3842). 

Definition: By pit edges (clearly seen layers of floor in pit edges). 

Execution: Trowel, mattock. 

Condition: Slightly moist. 

Consistency: hard, compact but friable when crushed 

Colour: 7.5 YR 3/4 dark brown also dark/black patches 

Texture: silty clay 

Bedding: layered (compound) 

Inclusions: charcoal 2 mm 2%; brick frag. 2 mm - 10 cm 10% top of layer/2% bottom of layer; hard clay lumps 5-20 cm 5% top of layer/50 cm 30% bottom of layer; plaster frags. 5-10 cm pieces 20% top/30 cm 5% bottom of layer; also bone frags, animal tooth, obsidian and what looks like a piece of crystal 

Post-depositional Features: small animal burrow 

Basal Boundary: sharp/well defined/smooth/prominent
