Unit 3890
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: levelling deposit,oven demolition
Data Category Information: In Situ: non in-situ; Location: building; Material: pise-like; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: average 0.11 m thick; 0.5 m N-S x 0.3 m W-E excavated
Discussion: A mixed deposit consisting of crushed oven lining (finely broken up) and clean pale yellowish brown sand. It looks like the demolition material from a fire installation which pre-dates FI242, but perhaps occupied roughly the same space. (3889) above which also contains crushed oven lining looks like a separate phase. It is possible that (3890) is actually a number of different layers but this seems unlikely. (3890) seems to have functioned in part as a levelling deposit to raise a lowered area, possibly around the fire installation.
Recognition: Vertically different colour/texture, horizontally arbitrary edges.

Execution: Partially excavated by trowel.
Condition: Normal.
